Rules of the Event

  1. Participating Playwrights and directors and actors shall apply and will be selected by the Producers (Masakini Theatre Company) should applications exceed the required numbers.

    1. Participating Playwrights will select and engage a Director from the list of applicants to be provided by the Producer.
    2. Each combination of Playwright, Director, and Actors for the purposes of this project will be known as a ‘Team’.
At the start of the 24 hour project:
    1. Participating Teams shall be given a set description to work with.
    2. This description will specify all scenery, masking, and lighting, and any other technical or physical paraphernalia that will exist in situ for the performance.
    3. Teams are not allowed to include any other features, furniture or effects not listed in the set description, nor may they include any additional lighting or sound requirements.
    4. The inclusion of Hand-Props of their own choice is permissible.

  1. Each Team will be given a special ‘Prop’, selected by the Producers, which MUST be incorporated by the Playwright and Director as an integral element to the Play.

  2. All participating actors shall be auditioned…
    1. Each actor shall prepare one-minute audition piece of his/her own choosing which shall be performed in front of the Playwrights.
    2. Each actor shall be given a number to indicate the order in which they audition.
    3. When his/her number is called, the corresponding actor will immediately go on-stage and deliver his/her piece.
    4. When the allotted time expires the next number shall be called whether or not the previous actor has completed his/her piece.
    5. Playwrights and Directors are not allowed to interact with the actors during the audition process.
    6. No photography is allowed during the audition process.

  3. At the end of the audition process the playwrights will choose their actors. Allocation of actors to each Team is subject to the following….
    1. There is no limit to the number of actors that may be in any one Team.
    2. No single actor may be in more than one Team.
    3. All actors chosen MUST be actively incorporated into the action of the Play.
    4. Lots will be drawn should two playwrights wish for the same actor.

  4. All Teams should be formed by 8.30pm whence the commencement of the Project begins.
    1. Each Play must run no less than 10 minutes nor no greater than 15 minutes in playing time.
    2. Each Play must be capable of being ‘set-up’ for performance within a 5 minute period, and ‘struck’ after performance within an 2 minute period.

  5. Each Team shall have the freedom to determine for itself the manner in which it approaches the work of creating its own Play with the following exceptions…
    1. No improvised performances shall be allowed.
    2. No language, vocalization, nor physicality, that is likely to cause offense shall be allowed.

  6. Each Team shall be allowed to rehearse on-stage with a Stage Manager and the venue’s technicians for an allotted period, scheduled in advance by the Producers.

  7. A Technical/Dress Rehearsal shall be scheduled by the Producers to conclude at least 1 hour prior to curtain-up for the public performance.
    1. Each Team must hand a copy of the script of their Play to the Producer before the commencement of the Technical/Dress rehearsal.
    2. The Technical/Dress rehearsal will be directed by an overall Independent Director and Stage Manager engaged by the Producers, and all participants will agree to acknowledge and accept this Independent Director’s and Stage Manager’s overall authority and impartiality in coordinating the public performance.
At the conclusion of the 24 hours….
  1. All Teams will stand-by ready for their performance at 8:00pm on the day of the public performance, which will commence at 8.30pm.

  2. A panel of 5 independent judges will determine a winner and runner-up based on…
    1. The best play
    2. The best overall production
    3. The best actor
    4. The best Ensemble
    5. The best Director

  3. The decision of the judges will be final and not open to appeal.
